DIM Ultra Dietary supplements are being studied for their protective effects against certain cancers. They are also used to help prevent prostate enlargement, to treat acne, to help with weight loss, and to reduce premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopausal symptoms.
While these benefits are promising, overall research on DIM performance and long-term safety in humans is limited.
It may have anti-cancer effects
Experimental and animal experimental studies suggest that DIM supplements can help prevent the growth and spread of breast cancer cells. However, human studies are limited (1Trusted Source, 2Trusted Source).
The annual study provided 130 women with breast cancer treatment with tamoxifen treatment either placebo or 150 mg DIM twice a day. DIM supplements have resulted in a highly improved balance of two types of estrogen – 2-hydroxyestrone and 16-hydrozyestrone (8Trusted Source).
Although research is still ongoing, increasing the level of 2-hydrozyestrone to 16-hydrozyesterone can reduce the risk of breast cancer and cause anti-tumor effects (8Trusted Source).
A 30-day study of 19 postmenopausal women with first-line breast cancer found that taking 108 mg of DIM per day also caused beneficial changes in estrogen levels (9Trusted Source).
Experimental studies
Experimental studies with animal and animal tissue show that DIM protects against cervical, prostate, and testicular cancer. However, human studies are required (10Trusted Source, 11Trusted Source, 12Trusted Source).
Significantly, a mouse study found that DIM helped prevent cervical cancer. However, in a 6-month study of 551 women with cervical malformations, taking 150 mg of DIM per day had no effect on cervical cell changes (3Trusted Source, 13Trusted Source).
It can protect against prostate issues
DIM supplements can prevent prostate growth and prostate cancer.
In fact, it may be helpful in combating prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), a condition characterized by enlargement of prostate cells and considered a precursor of prostate cancer (14Trusted Source).
In a 12-month study, 21 men with high-dose PIN were given a placebo or 900 mg DIM per day. Those given DIM received significant improvements in prostate health, as well as PIN (14Trusted Source).
Experiments with experimental tubes and animals similarly suggest that DIM helps fight prostate cancer. However, further human research is needed (15Trusted Source).
It may promote weight loss
Given that estrogen plays an important role in controlling fat accumulation, DIM supplements can help with weight loss – although no human research supports this effect yet.
However, studies link estrogen imbalances – too much or too little – with an increased risk of weight gain in both men and women (16Trusted Source, 17Trusted Source, 18Trusted Source).
In addition, DIM supplements may promote fat loss and prevent the formation of fat cells.
In one study of rats with a high fat diet, 23 mg of DIM per pound (50 mg) of body weight significantly reduced the formation of new fat cells (19Trusted Source).
Remember that human studies are required.
Other possible uses and benefits
DIM ingredients are said to help with other hormonal-related conditions. However, it is important to remember that research is not present in all of these results.
It may fight acne. To treat hormonal acne sometimes DIM supplements are used. However, there are currently no studies to support this use (20Trusted Source, 21Trusted Source).
It may reduce the temperature. Hot flashes during menopause are likely to be caused by hormonal changes.
